About the Zine
Tectonic is an online platform for writing and art with occasional print editions. Tectonic issue 1: Zone explores textures of the earth, with ten artists using prose and imagery to unpack this theme. Issue 1 is stocked in Sydney, Melbourne and New York at Printed Matter Inc.
Issue 2: Dissonance (currently in production) explores the theme of noise through video, photography, essay and poetry.
Anaya Latter is the founder and editor of Tectonic, an online platform for writing and art with occasional print editions. She lives and works in Melbourne, and makes ceramic objects in her spare time.
WHY DID YOU START MAKING ZINES?
I took a series of photos of rock formations in Broome, (Rubibi, Jugun-Yawuru country) and New Zealand (Aotearoa). I felt I wanted to publish them somehow, and asked friends and artists I admired to respond to this idea of textures of the earth, geology and rocks. The submissions that came back were really beautiful and unique, and formed issue 1.
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF THE COMMUNITY?
There are some incredibly talented and passionate zine makers and stores devoted to showcasing local work, like Nowhere Special in Brunswick. It’s always great to meet people who are interested in independent publishing
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE?
Just do it, for your own pleasure – who knows what will come of it?
