About the Zine
F*EMS is a Melbourne-run space for female- and woman-aligned people to creatively express themselves by submitting to our triannual zine. Women from all walks of life are welcome and encouraged to use our zine, in addition to the accompanying events we organise, as a platform to have their voices heard.
The zine is published three times a year, and each issue has a unique theme to inspire contributors. The theme for our latest issue (Issue 8) was ‘Lost & Found’, and we received submissions of work from both Australian and International artists and writers.
WHY DID YOU START MAKING ZINES?
As artists we often use zine making in our own work as we love the quick and easy method for expression that it allows for. F*EMS Zine originated as we wanted a space where we could share our work and ideas with each other. F*EMS Zine aims to offer female-identifying people an opportunity to express themselves, in a similar way that creative-types have been using zines for many decades.
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF THE COMMUNITY?
The zine community in Melbourne is fantastic, exciting and supportive. We feel very lucky to be surrounded by many artists who are engaged in making and sharing zines, and very grateful to be supported by organisations like Sticky Institute, and various libraries.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE?
Go for it! Start small if that makes you feel more comfortable, but know that a zine can be whatever you want or need it to be.
